Auckland, last night. Joseph Newman, the weH-kuown temperance advocate. and chairman of the Auckland Brokers* Association, was passing the railway station, when the signboard waa b’own from the post by the force of the wind, and struck him on the head, rendering him unconscious and shaking him severely. Ho is an old man. It is thought po bQnes ara broken, but his condition is very serious. Henry Funcke. charged with shooting the late Constable McLeod at Dargavllle, waa brought before the Supreme Court to day. The medical officer of th© Asylum and Dr Moor declared prisoner was too insane to plead, and Drs Philson and Girdler that he was not. The question was referred to the jury, but they couM not agree. The Judge, hnwpver, will not take their decision until they have locked up twelve hours from one o’clock this afternoon.
