The Gisborne Standard AND COOK COUNTY GAZETTE. Published every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday Morning.

Saturday, September 13, 1890. THE STRIKE.

Be just and fear not; Let all the ends thou aim’st at be thy country’s, Thy God’s, and truth’s.

Strike matters are in much the same position, there as yet being no sign of a concession on either side. One thing is clear, that the Unionists are gradually being worsted, and that the longer the struggle is continued the weaker will their position be. It is regrettable that some good effort at conciliation has not already been made, and those whose sympathies are with thecause of Labor, in the struggle if not in the cause that led to it, cannot but deplore that there is not an effort to make terms while it can yet be done profitably on both sides. Stubbornness in such a case amounts to a serious offence, for which no excuse can be offered, and the satisfaction of causing still further losses to capitalists is belter done .without. A supreme effort ought now to be made to terminate the struggle, and the leaders of the Labor cause would act with more wisdom if they at onceacknowledged that they are likely to get the worst punishment in the end, and tbat.it is well to try and make an honorable retreat while there is yet the opportunity.
