BOROUGH COUNCIL.

Tns above met on Tuesday evening. Present: The Mayor and Crs Coleman, Harding, McLernon, Hepburn, Taylor, Joyce, and Lewis, The Mayor congratulated the Councillors who had been recently elected. Or Lewis briefly replied, hoping that he would be able to give satisfaction in the future as he had tried to do in the past. Crs Joyce and Taylor also responded, expressing their thanks to the Mayor and their desire to fulfil the duties to the best of their ability, Mr T, Faram wrote enquiring why he had been deprived of his vote as a burgess. When the Council had remitted lhe rates on the property he had given the use nf he did not know his name would be taken from the roll. —The Mayor said there seemed to be a misunderstanding somewhere.—Or McLernon said the Council had received an equivalent. The question 'arose as to whether the rates were to have been remitted on the whole of the property. Cr Joyce said that was his. remembrance, but he knew nothing cf Mr Faram’s name being struck off the roll.—Mr Faram said the understanding distinctly waa the whole of the rate should be remitted.— The Mayor said the best thing to do would bq to strike the rate in ths ordinary course and then remit it; otherwise Mr Faram could not hold a vote.—This course was agreed to, The Overseer made a general report. Referring to the water main contract he expressed the opinion that the boxes that cover the hydrants are too small, some having to be chipped before they were put on; also leather washers had been put on the ball valves instead of India rubber.

It was proposed by Cr Lewis, seconded by Cr McLernon, and carried, that the work of fixing mains be done to the satisfaction of the Overseer.

The Inspector of Nuisances referred attention to the bad state of the drain running through the property of the Chinamen in Grey Street.—The Mayor said the property was so low that it waa almost impossible for the Council to devise mean, of draining it—it was for that pqrpose the deep drain was originally made in Grey street.—Ora Coleman aqd McLernoon considered that it would be sufficient if the main drain were cleaned out.—The suggestion was recommended to the Overseer to attend to.

The following accounts were passed for payment : —A. Phipps £3, Gas Company £1 4s, bridge, account 17s, Returning Officer £4 4s, W. G. Scottcr £1 14s 9d, Clements and Grey £2 Gt 31, M. Morgan, £2 Bs, Finn and Chrisp £l3 14s 2d, petty cash £9 9s 6d, Brown and Smaill £57.

Several small road repairs were referred to,

It was resolved that the next ordinary meeting been Monday instead of Tuesday, so as to have all accounts ready for the annual balance.

After the ordinary meeting of the Council a special meeting was held to foimally rescind a resolution under the Rating Act, which had been found tq he erroneously made, and it was resolved that a special meeting be held •t a future date to put the resolution in proper form, Cr Joyce dissented, saying it was surprising that this resolution had never been thought of before so much money was paid to lawyers. If the rates were .collected according to the MuniciAl Corporations Act, nothing of this kind necessary. If it was of such importance now he did not see why it was not passed years ago. They were making a twelfth cqpimandment before they had the eleventh.—The Mayor said the Act alluded to had only recently been passed.. At anyrate the motion was only to crU a special meeting to deal with the matter, and if any Councillor objected then would be the most Suitable time to give expression to his views. —The subject then dropped, Mid th<? incqtina terminated.

Holy Trinity Church was crowded yesterday when the Bev. Canon Fox joined in the bonds of matrimony Mr Arnold Wethered and Miss Clara Dunlop, who are both well known in the district, and blessed with a very wide circle of friends. The bride looked very nice, attired in a cream cashmere dnsss, beautifully trimmed, aitd a with handsome vei l . The brideehnirls' Were the Misses Scott, Wethered, and Bennett, who were also very tastefully dressed. Messrs P. Bourke and Parker acted as groomsmen, and Mr C. Dunlop gave the hride away.
