HAWKE’S BAY SPRING MEETING. Napier, last night. The first day of the Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club’s Spring meeting secured a fairly large attendance of spectators, and the weather was good. The easy victory of the locally owned horse over Crackshot and Medallion, for the Guineas, was a complete boil over, Oeo, the Gisborne horse, did not show up much in the company that he got into for the hurdles. October Handicap, 60 Bova—Boulanger 1, Kotuku 2, Princess Helen 3. Won easily. Nine horses faced the starter. Kotuku held a good position throughout, but Boulanger came up at the finish and won rather easily. Time. 2m 3s; div., £4 13s. Hurdles, 100 sovs—Turaekatai 1, Raven 2, Argo 3. Oeo and four others started. Won easily. Time, 4m Ils: div., £ll ss, HAWKE’S BAY GUINEAS of 250 «ovr. One mile. Mr J. D. Ormond's b c St, Andrew, by St. Leger—Scottish Lassie 1 Mr P. The public rushed Medallion on the machine. He was red hot favorite, but never took a good position throughout the race, and was hopelessly in the rear at the finish, St. Andrew winning as he liked. Time, Im 455; div., £5 Bs. Maiden Plate, ot 50sovs., 1| miles.— Kupenga 1, Queen of Trumps 2, Lady Hamilton 3. Four others ran. Won by a length. Time, 2m 17s. Welcome Stakes, ot 75sove., 5 furlongs,— Rotefeldt 1, Cretonne 2, Free Lancs 3. This was a very exciting race, and was woa by a neck. Time, Im 7s; div., £4 10s. Corinthian Stakes, of aOsovs, 1J mile.— Blue Mountain, 1; Pursestring, 2; Grace Darling 3. Six others ran. Won by half a length. Time, 2m, 20s. Div. £7 Bj. Flying Handicap ot 7a»ove., 6 furlongs.— Boulanger, 1; Kotnku, 2; Leolantis, 3 Seven ethers ran. Woa by a length. Time, Im. 19s. Div. £9 Bs.
MELBOURNE TRAINING NOTES. Melbourne, Saturday. Curassier and Leopold arrived at Caulfield to-day, where the Queenslanders, Abacus, Yowie, and King William, are doing good work, especially the former, who is moving with great freedom. Cuirassier looks a bit beefy |about the neck and shoulders, but Leopold is in splendid condition.
WAERENGA-A-HIKA JOCKEY CLUB. The annual meeting of the Waerenga-a-hika Jockey Club was held at the Masonic Hotel on Saturday afternoon. There were present 1 Messrs Q. Di Bennett (in the chair), W. Cooper, R, Colebrook, A. Devery, S. Parker. E. O’Dwyer, M. Hogan, D. Barry, J, Orr, and J. A. Harding (Hon. Secretary). The following report was presented and adopted, together with the balance sheet Your Committee have much pleasure in laying before the Clqb a very satisfactory balance sheet for the past season, bom-
mencing the year with a credit balance of £l)3 3s 101, after paying all liabilities, there is the snm of £139 I'Js 41 to the Club’s credit, and £5 good Buhseriptionß due, showing a profit of £5l 15s 61 on the year’s transactions, as last season showed a loss of £33 7s Id. This must be deemed satisfactory, and a proof that the Club still »h|rek the support and approval of tho racing public. £lO was added to the stakes 'for the Miy meeting. anH it is hoped yonr incoming Committee will see their way to still further increase the value of the stakes for the coming season. The race course having changed hands, the item of rent for course is £lO higher than previous years Your Committee suggest that steps be taken to provide a permanent course on rnooe favorable terms. Your Committee beg to tendor their thanke to Mr C. D. Bennett and Captain Winter for gratuitously acting as handicapper and starter, their services as usual being most efficient.
The following officers were elected for the ensuing year : President, Mr G. L. Sunderland; Vice-President, Mr W. Wethered ; Judge and Handicapper, Mr C. D. Bennett ; Clerk of Scales, Mr R. Colebrook; Clerk of Course, Mr A. Pritchard ; Stewards, Messrs G. L. Sunderland, W. Wethered, A. Hatten, C, D. Bennett, W. Cooper, S. Parker, R. Colebrook, A. Devery, and J. Orr; Secretary, Mr J, A. Harding ; Treasurer, Mr Maynard. A programme similar to that of last year, but with the addition of a half mile scurry for hacks, was adopted. The members expressed themselves well satisfied with the condition of things, and highly complimented the Secretary on the way he had carried out the duties of his office.
