A Warning to Larrikins.
A lad named WiLiam Markie was brought before Mr Booth, R. M., yesterday morn mg, on the information of Constable Pardy .charged with disturbing the Salva ion Arnij- meeting on Sunday last, by throwing s ones on the roof of their barracks. The boy, who is fifteen years old, and small for his age, was placed in ’he dock, but did not appear to realise the gravity of the situation. Mr Nolan appeared for the hoy and pleaded guilty. Io doing ko he asked the Court to take into consideration the b«y’s age, and as there Was only a penalty provide i by th« Act for such an offence ho would ask the bench to deal a* leniently ss possible with the lad. He thought a severe reprimand would meet the case, and would possibly hav? a f+r greater effect on the boy* in the future, Mr Booth said he did not think the b y’s age was a sufficient excuse—he was quite old enough to know how to conduct himself. It was simp'y disgraceful thar any religious body should be disturbed by these ‘arrrikius.—Mr Nolan thought it was eld r boys put the younger ones up to the stone throwing —ln rep’y to the bench Mark e said he was receiving 10® a week and found — Sergeant Girlyon stated that the bid’s father had expressed satisfaction at the boy being caught, and hoped tha’ he would be made an example of. There was no doubt but that bigger hoys were concerned in disturbing the Army, and the police were doing all they con’d to catch them Mr Boo’h said it was enough to make a person ashamed of the town he lived in when such larrikinism as this was carried on He would inflict a fine of £l, and gave the d- f-ndnnt a month to pav it in, th® unders'anding being tbit it should he deducted weekly Fom th® lad’s wages. In case default should be made in payment the matte* wi ! l be brought before the enurt again. His Worship addressed the defendant on the shameful nature of the rffence and regretted that th? lad was h?vond the age at which be cou’d order him to be whipped. If ever be or any nlh?r lad osm? b?f 're that court again charged wi'h a similar ft nee he would have no compassion on the < Sender.
