COLONIAL TELEGRAMS.
WELLINGTON. Last night. The writs were issued this morning, fixing the election for the Th of December, and they are returnable by the loth of tint month. A supplement to the Gazette issued this evening contains the appointments of returning officers for the election of memuers of the House of Representatives, and the polling places. The coal supply for household purposes is still short, and prices rule high. Kitchen and Son’s soap works have stopped operations for the present, owing to the want of coal. Farther informations for stone throwing were preferred to-day against the youths concerned in the late outrage at the Hutt in which the young man Smith lost his life. The accused were fined 50s and costs The Secretary of the Wharf Laborers ’ Union had an interview this morning with the Minister of Lands, making application for 100 acres each for 50 men. A site near Pahiatua was mentioned. The Minister promised to look into the matter, but he thought they would find it more advantageous to take up land which would not necessitate their incurring survey fees. This afternoon a d-finite refusal was made by Government, in regard to tho particular block of land. CHRISTCHURCH. Last night. The dividends paid in the Criterion Stakes at Christchurch were £22 16s and £l9 7s. The starters for the Derby, b-mdes the placed horses, were St. Andrew, St, Ledger, Scottish Lassie, Diadem, Bundnora, and Wave. The winner, Medallion (Nordenfelt—-Looket) was bred at Sylvia Park, Auckland, and when a yearling was bnught for 500 guineas by Mr Stead. Tha Metropolitan Stakes was wop by Strephon, Wolverine second.
