Mr Swan and Mr Gannon.

(SFECIAX. SO THIS STANDABD.) NaflEh, last night. Mr Swan addressed a crowded meeting at the Theatre Royal last night. He favored generally the policy of the present Government. Though averse to the property tax he could not nt present see a fitting substitute without injury to the farming interests and the working classes. He said emphatically he was not a nominee of Mr Ormond or in any way indebted to him for his candidature. Referring to Mr Gannon's speech at the Gaiety Theatre, Mr Swan said that Mr Gannon had put an unwarranted construction upon one passage in his (Mr Swan’s) election address, in interpreting the words as now arranged " to medn that Mr Swan was going to Wellington to arrange Mr Ormond’s titles. Mr Swan said it was a paltry, mean thing for Mr Gannon so to twist an adversary’s words, and a man who oould do it was not to be trusted, he feared, but he hoped the electors would not let thb stigma rest upon them of allowing this important district to accept the thrice rejected candidate of Poverty Bay. There were many expressions of dissent during Mr Swan’s speech, which lasted an hour and forty minutes, but at its conclusion ho received a vote of thanks and confidence without dissent.
