SPORTING.

At a meeting of the stewards of the Waiapu Jockey Qlub—held last week—it was decided to give £l5O away in stakes, 50 soys, of which will be allotted to the big event—the Waiapu Handicap. As it is not unlikely that this event will be an open one, some of our local owners may be induced to have a cut in for the big money. At the Liverpool meeting on the Bt.h inst, the Lancashire Plate was won by Queen of the Dale, John Morgan 2, and Golden Cresent 3.

The remaining events of the C.J.C. race meeting resulted as follows Jockey Club Handicap : St. Andrew 1, Von Tempsky 2, Ruby 8 Tattersall's Plate: Inez 1, Crown Jewel 2, Loo 3.

The following are the results of the Victoria Raping Club’s Spring Meeting Foal Stakes: The Spot 1, Whimbrel 2, Prelude 3. Flemington Stakes : Lord Hopotoun 1, Sophietta 2, Hartington 3. VR C. Handicap : Correze 1, Enuc 2, Little Bernie 3. Steeplechase : Sir Wilfred 1, Mannion 2, Titokowaru 3, Canterbury Plate: Megaphone 1, King William 2, Melos 3. Free Handicap: Mupiel 1, Tarcoola 2, Carrington 3.

A Timee reporter writes of the Canterbury Derby race:—St Andrew made most of the running until the straight was reach-d, and long before that Medallion hid tailed off in wbat looked like a hopeless fashion. However, the pace had never been very fast, and when St Andrew retired in the straight, leaving tbe race apparently to Crackahot and Freedom, Clifford was able to bring Medallion with a well sustained run, and catching the fast tiring leader in the distance, won comfortably by a length. Medallion's win was certainly a somewhat remarkable reversal of form, but the real state of the case no doubt is that St Andrew and Crackshot have both gone off since their wins at Hawkels Bay, while Mr Stead’s colt has been benefited to a great extent by hie tate gallops. However that may be, there was no call for the demonstration with which an ill n&tured section of the public greeted the colt on his being led on to the lawn to be decorated with the blue ribbon.
