AUCKLAND. List night. Severs! vessels of the Australian squadron besides German and French War vessels, sre expected next month. Splendid assays continue to be made at the Puhipuhi silver field, in the north. Sir George Grey is addressing a large meeting of electors to-night cn the best future policy for the colony. The Labor candidates for Auckland city will be Sir George Grey and Messrs C. 9. Wright and A. Bruce. The Baptist Union is sitting here. The annual r port shows an increase of 180 members for the colony during the year. The steamer Wairarapa, which is leaving for Sydney to-morrow, is taking large consignments of frozen fish. A meeting of citizens was held this afternoon t« try and prevent the breaking up of the Sylvia Park estate, but no definite arrangement could be arrived at. Major George offered £2,000 if four others would do the same. A man named Booth was found dead in bed at the Wade. At the races yesterday Cissy won the Spring Handicap, Orlando the Handicap Hurdles, and Bole the Nursery Handicap. A remarkable scene happened at the Druids’ Ball last night. Oae of the M.O’s , Mr Peter Maykie, was attired as Stanley the explorer, and in his belt he wore a revolver he had borrowed just before the ball. He was waltzing with a young lady, when she took the revolver, jokingly presented it at him, and pulled the trigger. The revolver went off. and took the extreme tip off his nose, while the girl fell in a dead faint. The affair caused a great sensation.
