A Verdant or Tricky Politician.

Our Rotorua correspondent Me graphs a humorous -account of how Mr Arthur worked things up North, but we had not room for it this morning-. The verdant politician, it appears, caused great fun at Rotorua. Some one, probably for a joke, proposed a vote of confidence, which someone else laughingly seconded sotto voce. The candidate then, without even waiting for the chairman to state the question, coolly rose and thanked the meeting for its courtesy. The Rotorua people enjoyed the little incident, and a smile lighted up each countenance, while it was concluded that the South had sent up a charming greenhorn at public meetings. But the best of it is that the same thing is said to have been subsequently tried in other places^and th' Rotorua people are now wondering wheih.it was really innocent ignorance or a clew but questionable political dodge. The fac’ was that Mr Arthur did not even get thank, at Rotorua, because people had not recovere> from the joke when he proposed thanks to the chairman.
