BRITISH AND FOREIGN.
The British Parliament has adjourned till the third week in January. The London stevedores have refused to strike. : - The Grand Duke Nicholas, uncle of the Czar, is hopelessly insane. The Indians are becoming cowed, and if relieved of starvation they will, it is probable, quieten down. It is asserted that the English were the aggressors in the fracas at Malaccas, which led to the British flag being pulled down. The seceders from Parnell number 45, and his adherents 26. Parnell is preparing to stump Ireland. Reuter's Telegram Company has increased its capital, and intends to start an advertising agency. Australian shippers are arranging for a scheme of co-operative shipping, Twentyfive firms are supporting the scheme. The wool market is steadying with an improvement in prices. It is reported that King Kalakus, of the Hawiian Islands, will shortly visit Washington, with the view of selling the Islands to the United States Government. A panic has taken place on the New York stock exchange, and several large failures are announced. Commercial paper has been refused on all sides, and an amendment made to rely on currency alone. The Government propose to issue twenty million dollars, worth of a per cent, bonds.
