The Phonograph.
EDISOX'S TALKING MACHINE. Edison’s phonograph is to be placed before the public at the City Rink on Tuesday and Wednesday next by Messrs M’Mahon, whose business manager, Mr W. A. Jinkins, has been in town for the past few days. Professor Archibald Douglas, M.A., Oxon., will deliver a lecture, and exhibit the capabilities of the instrument, by means of which speeches by Mr Gladstone and songs by famous artistes are reproduced, instrumental aeteutions played on the other side of the world and rendered over again, and altogether the means are afforded for passing an evening in a way no only amusing, but interest ing and instructive. The programme to be presented on the first right wilt include cornet solos, by Mr Arthur Smith, first cornet of Govern Garden Opera Company; brnjr solos, clarionet and piano duet; a comic song bv Mr J L Toole ; a duet from ’■ Paul Jono<,” bv Messrs SnaXalle and Ld'oh ; Trie “ Charge of tin Light Brigade,” as recited by Mr Alfred Dampiar, of the Alexander Theatre, Melbourne; a message addressed by Mr Gladstone to Lord Carrington ; and many other interesting items. Edison’s wonderful phonograph, or “ talking machine,” has attracted crowded houses here. , Tne entertainment is declared the most novel and wonderful that has ever been offered to a Napier audience. To shoav the interest taken in the phonograph exhibitions here special trains from the country districts have been run to enable persons at a distance to witness the exhibitions. A special perform rnce will be given to-morrow (Saturday) afternoon, the Union C impany having detained the Rotomahana for a couple of hours, so as to allow time for an afternoon entertainment. Professor Archibald, an ootnpanied by Mr MacMahon and stuff, leave for Gisborne immediately after the performance.
