There is urgent necessity that the Harbor Board should no longer hesitate in providing better accommodation for passengers leaving and entering the town by boat. It is not a pleasant exercise for an able-bodied, athletic young man to scramble over the other shipping when he wants to get aboard the launch Snark, and be the Union Company’s officials ever so obliging, they cannot in such circumstances make an easy pathway for ladies and children. At the last meeting of the Board the Harbormaster submitted plans for a landing stage, the total cost of which is estimated at about £Bo. The wharf he recommends would be 44ft long by 12ft wide, and the outer end would be in a straight line with the present wharves, the site selected being nearly opposite the Turanganui Hotel, and clear of all mooring posts for other shipping. The depth of water would be as good as can be got on the present line of wharves. The actual expenditure of money required is estimated at 10s, £26 10s of which would be for labor. The Board have on hand all the material required above the sum stated. The estimate includes a shed with corrugated iron roof, and open at both ends. There may be differences of opinion as to what is the most suitable site, and on other matters of detail, but there can be no question that the landing stage is so badly required that its erection should be authorised directly the Board can see its way clear to have the work done.
