The Premier was good enough, at the complimentary banquet tendered to him, to try and remove all blame from the Governor for making the recent appointments to the Legislative Council, on the recommendation of a condemned Ministry. To uphold this contention he urged that whatever blame there was must be saddled upon those who offered the advice. This method of exonerating the Governor served to show the generous spirit in which the Premier took the matter, but as we stated will not satisfy the people, who expect some consideration from the representative of royalty whose salary they have to tax themselves to pay. A late number of the Sydney Telegraph is now to hand, and in an article on the subject it makes its opinion very plain in this matter. It deals at length with the whole question, put the points very fairly, and makes a strong condemnation of the conduct both of the Atkinson Ministry and of the Governor. It says that Lord Onslow can plead a technical justification, but had he resolutely declined to accept such advice from a Ministry which had created a political scandal by its mere clinging to office after being defeated, he would not only have had a technical justification, but he would have had a moral one. The opinion of our Sydney contemporary is specially valuable in this case, as there can be no suspicion that its judgment is warped by a desire to serve party ends.
