Musical Service.

There was a large attendance at the City Rink on Tuesday, when the cintata Queen Esther was repeated and followed by an excellent concert. The simple and melodious solos, duets, quartettes and choruses were very effectively rendered. From a musical .oint of view the cantata could not be said to je so well gone through as in the church building, the different range of voice required not having been fully maintained in the large hall, but the cantata was thoroughly enjoyed, and the whole production was highly creditable to the conductor (Mr Palairet) and those who took parts in it. The chornses especially were good, the time kept showing a fine state of efficiency. The second part of the programme was of a high-class nature. The vocalists were the same as on the previous evening, but different selections were given, encores being required and rapturous applause being bestowed upon those who contributed the entertainment. Miss Large has only to appear before a Gisborne audience to arouse enthusiasm, Mrs Bingham has acquired a popularity which is likely to bs of a permanent nature, and Mrs Palairet has long been a very warm favorite. Ot the well-trained voices of Mr Dalrymple and Mr Palairet, it would be unnecessary to again make remark. There would be a great blank in Gisborne musical circles without the assistance given by the Palairet family, Mr Dalrymple, and a few others, One excellent number during the concert was a 'oello and pianoforte duet by Messrs J. G. and G. Palairet, Mr Palairet, juu., is a very skilful player on the 'cello,
