DREADFUL SLAUGHTER. THE LYNCHING OF PRISONERS. [SPECIAL TO THI BTANDABD.I New Oblbanb, March 17. A number of Sicilians (belonging io a seers: Society believed to be pledged to the assasei nation of those against whom they or -1 heir compatriots h.ve a grudge) who were recently arrested tor the murder of Heunesey, Ciiiet ot the Police, were acquitted. The public were so enraged that a mob of several thousands of persons pillaged the gunshope, forced the prison doors open, and shot eleven Sicilians in their coho. Taey then proceeded to threaten tbe jury, and the military were called out. Tbe attack was organised by the leading citizens of the town, and lynching was approved by leading commercial bodies. The Italian Consul has demanded the punishment of the murderers. Mr Secretary Blaine expresses horror at the outrage, and ie conferring with tbe President.
Three leading lawyers harangued the crowd, which acted deliberately. The whole city wue incensed agsiost the tyranny and corruption of tbe M.fi. Society to which tbe Sicilians belonged, and it ie believed that tbe police officials connived at lynching. The Governor called out the military, but they were very alow in responding. The men who were shot inc.uied four who had been acquitted, three about wuom the jury disagreed, and four who would not have been tried.
It is alleged that a detective named O'Malley, who was an agent of the M.2a Society, bribed the jury, who narrowly escaped being lynched aiao. The foreman is ntw ia prison. The Italian newspapers threaten that the Ita.ian residents in the State of Louisiana will organise vendettas. Tbe Mafia Society threaten to poison the family of Parkinson, who ia said to have been the chief leader iu the original paitr. Secretary Blaine has communicated with King Humbert of Ita y, asking him to await a report from the Governor of Louisiana.
