SPORTING.
TOLOGA BAY JOCKEY CLUB.
The annual meeting ot the above Club was held on Tuesday last. Tbe course is situated on Mr A. Beeves' property, about three miles from the township. The weather was all that could be desired, the sky being sufficiently clouded to make the day enjoyable. The attendance was far greater than at previous meetings, a large number being present from Gisborne. A totalisator was on the ground ; it was worked by Messrs Cooper and Barry, and during the day £646 was put through the machine. There was a number of false starts, tbe horses, with only one exception, not being sent away on anything line even terms; in the Flying Handicap Zanzibar was left standing at the poet, and in the other races the horses were brought bkek to the starter either three or tour times. Tbe only thing that marred the day’s enjoyment was the fatal accident that occurred in the hurdle race, and in the same event a Maori horse named Keru struck one ot the jumps and broke hie foreleg. Camplainte having bees made to Constable Byan about the condition of the horse he interviewed Mr A, Beeves, J.P., on the matter, but tbat gentleman did not consider it within his province to order the animal to be destroyed, and it wae left with the owner whether he des troyed tbe horse or not. The orderly conduct of the natives wss especially noticeable, and there was not a single “ drunk ” on the course, elthnugh the Maoris were striking some of tbe big “diva." I—Huhdle Race, cf 20sovs., 2 miles, over eight flights of hurdles 3tt 6in high. Nomination, 15s ; acceptance, ss. Hepburn’s Duadine (Williams) .. .. 1 Green's Bit of Blue (Marshall) ~ .. 2 Casey's Kspai (Casey) .8 —Tbs Witch, Timi, and Keru also ran.
There were three false starts before the horses were got away pretty well together. Kapai took the lead, with Duadine next, and Bit of Blue third. The former maintained his position till half the distance had been covered, when Duadine drew up and tonk the lead. Just on reaching tbe last hurdle Bit of Blue came up with a splendid rush, and on entering the straight both horses were pretty well on even term*, but Duadine drew out, and won by a neck. The Witch ran off at the first hurdle. A protest was entered against the rider of Duadine, on a charge of having made a oro»e at tno feet hurdle, but the steward* did not uphold the protest. Dividend, £2 14s; 32 on winner, 95 on machine.

Stockfish led from the start and was never caught, coming in an easy winner by fully three lengths. Dividend, £1 19s ; 52 on winner, £ll5 on machine. B—Flymo Sraxxe, of aOsovo., f mile, handicap. Nomination, 15a; acceptance, ss. Hansen's Truthful (Cookrey) .. ~ 1 Thomson’s Bowxprit (Soeats) .. ..2 Casey 's Zaoho (Casey) 3 —Zanzibar, Black Nigger, Seldom Fed, and Deceiver alsofaced the starter.
Zacho took up tbe running from the fall of tbe fltg, and kept in the lead till the home turn was reached, when Truthful came to the front and won with the greatest of ease, the second and third hones being close together. Dividend, £4 8a; 27 on winner, 133 on machine.
4—Hack Back (handicap), of lOsove., Imile Entrance, 10s. Ingakore (8 0) Sceate ... ... ... 1 Stockfish (97) Smith S Mangahone (100)... ... 3
—For this event there were fire other starters.
The race proved a gift for Ingakore, but on entering the straight a splendid finish resulted between the next placed horses. Dir.. £1 18s, 50 on winner, 108 on machine.
s—Uawa Stakh (handicap), of SOsovs., 2 miles. Nomination, laov,; acoeptanee, 10s. Bailey’s Zanzibar (Soeats) 1 Greene’s Bit of Blue (Malone) 2 Hansen’s Truthful (Cookrey) 8 •—Deceiver, Nora, Waitangi, Psni, and Taino also started. Wit «f Blue broke away twice at the
starting post, and g«U>ped near.y two miles before he could tic pull’d up. When the horses were got awav Bit of Blue was in the lead, with Zunzilmr cluse up, but before tnnch distance had been covered the chestnut had drawn ahead, and the lead was never wrested from him. Dividend, £l4 14s; 9on winner, £147 on machine. 6—Fohcid Handicap, cf lOsov*., 1 mile and a distance. Nomination. 10s. Compulsory to winners, op ional to others. Hansen's Truthful. 8 7 (Cookrey) ... 1 Mangahone, 8 7 (Smith) 2 Casi-y's Ziccbo ... 3 —Bowsprit, also started. Tbie wae the beet contested race of the d.vy. Bowsprit took the lead, but Truthful soon drew out and a splendid finish reru t d, the other horses being close together. Dividend, £3 18s; 11 on winner, £4B on machine.
