BOROUGH COUNCIL.

An ordinary meeting of the above was held on Tuesday evening. Present: The Mayor and Crs Taylor, Joyce, Whinray, Dunlop, and Lewis. The second circular from Wellington in regard to the proposed Municipal Conference was read. Cr Whinray spoke warmly in support of the financial proposals, saying that he never could comprehend why colonial public bodies should have to pay such extortionate rates of interest. He favored a delegate being sent to the Conference.—The Mayor said the question of sending a delegate would come up at a future meeting, and it was resolved to defer discussion of the proposals. '

On the report of the Overseer it was decided that the footpath between Derby and Cobden streets be picked (cost £2) before the shingle is put on. The silver poplars in front of the Gisborne Hotel were ordered to be cut down, as they had become a nuisance. Fourteen of the diagonal braces of the Taruheru bridge required repairing, cost £8 15s, and the work was authorised ; also that timber be procured at the same time to kerb the west side of Peel street from Gladstone road round Mr Shelton’s corner. A few repairs were authorised in regard to the recreation ground, and no other stock is to be allowed to graze there in the winter months. '■The calling of tenders was authorised for cleaning outlet drains (estimate, On the proposition of Cr Lewis, seconded by Cr Dunlop, it was resolved to call for tenders before next meeting for the supply of from 500 to 1000 yards of Patutahi metal, to be broken by contractor. On the suggestion of Cr Taylor it was resolved to also call tenders for a supply of 100 yards of Kaiti gravel, for filling in holes on the roads.

A doubt was raised as to whether £2s worth of work had been done within the Borough in return for the grant made to the Kaiti Road Board for the road near the bridge. Cr Lewis moved, and Cr Joyce seconded, that the account be deferred until the Overseer had repoited on the work done.
