Intemperance.
(TO TUB I'DITOB. ]
Sib,—At the request of several gentlemen in Gisborne I.have been induced, ttiroogn your columns, to draw attention to the decidedly intemperate remarks uttered on Tuesday evening last by aMr Glover, To embellish an argument he bad ignorantly to descend to instancing a recent death by accident which has occurred in our midst, and not satisfied with untruthfully stating that the unfortunate man met hie death through being under the influence of intoxicating liquor, be had the hardihood to etale that the original cause of the deceased leaving his home (which happens by the way to have been of a more superior class than any man of Mr G.’s stamp could possibly imagine) was “ the accursed drink.” No wonder the audience gathered in Gladstone road loudly showed their disapproval. The man (gentleman by birth and education it may be stated) has never borne the name of a drunkard here, and the Apostle of Temperance (?) may search the records in vaiu to discover any accusation of the nature made having ground. The highest form of Christanity is evidently not the one preached by this itinerant, nor is his preaching the one taught by the truest lover of men who ever walked this earth,—l am, etc., an Old Fbibnd.
