The well-known spotting writer “ Buff and Hl i.'k ” writes as follows concerning our local horses Caitiff, the Gisborne hor.e, who is , good fencer, won the Second Handicap Hurdle Race easily, and had his rider exercised a little m >re judgment he might have won the first day, for Darnley, who was cutting out the running for Ival, appirendv. l«d him astray, and he went along with Mr G illen's horse at a clinking pace for a mile. Darnley formerly belonged to Gisborne, and is by Bothwell. Caitiff also comes from that place, and is by the same sire. They bring out some good fencers in Poverty Bay. Misfortune, the Gisborne mare, who had the misfortune tn b* left behind in every race, is by old Lmnato, who in past vesrs his figured on ths Ha-tings race course hunself. A good many Gi.horne people • feu ’ over Mt.forlun* on 'll. fl'st day, hut she was not herae.f, behaving badly at the post, and gelling left hopelessly in ih. rear. He ran third i i the Barks Me norial Stakes, which I thought he would wi ~ bul when I ,'a'e that the mile and a half was out out in he quickest tim. on record, 2.88, no wonder can be exore.eed at his not having won. He Shoo'd have a cut in at the Park meeting, however.”
