The football season opens on Saturday. The Gisborne Rowing Club’s gymnasium is now in full swing, with a large membership. It is probable that H.M.S. Cnracoa will pay a visit to Gisborne within the next few weeks. On Tuesday, at the Polios Court, a woman was fined 7s for drunkenness, and yesterday a first offender was cautioned for the same offence. The following have been licensed as Custom House Agents:—W. Adair, P. H. Bonrke, J. W. Bright, C, P. Davies, D. Dougherty, J. T. Evans, H. E. Johnston, A. F. Kennedy, D. M. Orr, and F. J. Shelton. Adjutant Holdaway, who is well known in Gisborne ia connection with the Salvation Army, comes to Gisborne in about, a week's time, with Mrs Holdaway, and some members of the Maori corps. Special services are to be held by the visitors. Captain Garbutt is likely to leave Gisborne soon on account of the bad state of Mrs Garbut t's health. At the monthly meeting of ths Public Library Committee on Tuesday evening it was stated that the number of subscribers is now 124, an increase of five on the previous report. A consignment of new books will shortly arrive, many of them being the lato publications, which ought to induce many fresh subscribers. It was decided to arrange a popular entertainment in aid of the funds, at an early date. . The case of J. M. Arundel v. F, Hall, A. Ward, and W. H. Taylor, alleged forcible entry, occupied the R.M, Court yesterday, and was eventually adjourned till 10 to-morrow morning. Mr L. Bees appeared for plaintiff, and Mr DeLautour with Mr Skeet for defendants. The case arose out of a dispute concerning business relations between Messrs Arundel and Hall, and the latter, with the assistance of the other defendants, made entry upon the premises. Trouble ensued, the action being the outcome, The conversazione to be held this evening as a farowell to the Rev. J. Ward is likely to ba largely attended by town and country friends. Ths rev. gentleman is certainly highly deserving of public recognition of ihe untiring energy and zeal for his work that he has exhibited in Gisborne, and the gathering of friends this evening will be a fitting opportunity to mark the public appreciation of Mr Ward’s efforts. It ought to form a happy meeting which all will remember with pleasure, tempered, however, by the regret that the path of duty should have so soon called Mr Ward from the district.
