Welcome Soiree.

THE RECEPTION OF THE REV. MR GIBSON. THE weather was very unfavorable last night for the welcome soiree to the Rev. S. G. Gibson, but there was, notwithstand. ing, a good attendance. The schoolroom bore quite a festive appearance, the tables being laden with edibles and beautifully set off with floral decorations, while some attempt had also been made to take the bareness off the walls. All the tables were well laid out, and reflected great credit on those who had charge of them, The following ladies had tables :— Mesdames Spence, East, and Reynolds, assisted by Misses Reynolds, Skillicorn, Spence, and Warren., Mesdames Erskine and Ledger, assisted by Mesdames Robb and Jones and Miss E. Jones. Mesdames Chrisp and Birch, assisted by Misses Chrisp, Oxehham, and Whinray. Mesdames Burnand and Veale, assisted by Misses Pritchard and Lewis, There was a fair attendance at the public meeting, the Mayor being in the chair. Interesting addresses were delivered by the Revs. Ryburn and Canon Fox, Captain Martin, and Messrs Scotter and DeLautour. The Rev. Mr Gibson, in a bright yet earnest speech, replied, thanking everyone for the kind welcome he had received. During the evening Messrs Searle and East sang, and the choir contributed several selections. As provision had been made for many who were kept away by the rain, arrangements have been made by which another tea will be held this evening, at reduced prices.
