The annual social gathering in connection with tho Druids’ Lodge is fixed for July 14. Mr C. Lewis is acting as- Secretary for tho affair.
A meeting of tho Gisborne School Committee was held last night, and it was stated that the playground site would not be taken for the master’s residence.
There is an enormous sale of reserved seats for Madams Patey’s oonoart at the Bink on Friday night. Those intending to ba present are particularly reminded that the time of commencing the concert is 7 30. The well known coach and wheelwright business of Messrs Brown and Smaill has been taken over by Messrs Hall and Ormond, excellent samples of whose work can ba seen about Gisborne any day. The new firm can be fully relied on to efficiently carry on the business.
An emergency meeting of Lodge Montrose will ba held this evening in the Lodge room for tho purpose of receiving Bro. W. McCullough. Provisional Grand Master Depute, and the members of the Provisional Grand Lodee. Members of Lodge Montrose who have been elected officers of the Provisional Grand Lodge will ba installed into their respective offices by Bro. McCullough. Brethren of the sister Lodges are specially invited to attend on this occasion.
“ A famous history” is wbat the Wellington Press calls the decision in the Edwards case. A decision where two Judges at least are in the minority does not give much room for gloating, however correct the majority may be.
At tha Police Court yesterday, before Mr Lewis, J.P., P. Malone was fined £1 for being drunk while in charge of a horse ; E. Bolton was flood a like amount for being drunk and disorderly, and J. Corrigan was fined £1 for leaving his trap-horse unattended. Melbourne offers £llOO for a new Town C'erk, who must have hie lite insured at an equivalent sum.

The annual meeting of the Gisborne Phonographic Society takes place on Saturday night. At the last merting of the Society it was mentioned that a substantial portion of the property had been destroyed in the fire at the Secretary’s house. A motion was passed sympathising wi'h the Secretary in bis personal loss, and indemnifying bim in regard to any loss the Society had sustained. A committee meeting of the Harbor Board is to be held at 3 this afternoon to consider Mr Bell's opinion on the position of the Board in regard to the defalcations.
Hepeta Kuare, a popular young Maori, at one time a great athlete, died at the Karaka on Sunday. He was a member of the East Coast Hnssars, and. a military funeral is to be accorded him this afternoon. The Hussars leave the Masonic Hotel at 9 this morning.
The result of the Edwards case at present is rather peculiar. Three of the five judges held, on the technical ground that the Governor could appoint as many Judges as he pleased, that the appointment was valid ; at the same time all the Judges agreed that the salary must be voted by Parliament. This clearly proves, though technically right, the late Government were morally wrong in making the appointment. One of the majority on the Bench admitted that according to law "Judge” Edwards could be removed by an address from both Houses, and hinted that this should be done if necessary. The Royal Humane Society has bestowed its highest award—a gold medal—upon an officer of a vessel who, while in the Gulf of Aden, known to be infested with sharks, jumped overboard and saved tho life of a seamen. Emigration from Europe to the.
