HAWKE’S BAY JOCKEY CLUB’S STEEPLECHASE MEETING. Ths above meetihg took place on tho Hastings course on Thursday last, but the weather was not all that could be desired, it being dull, could, and threatening. Nevertheless, a great many people journeyed out to assist at the gathering, which, at the outset, promised to ba one of the best crosscountry meetings held for years. A great many foreign visitors were present, and animals from other centres were r-adily backed for the different events in which they started. The race for the Hawke’s Bay Steeplechase is described by the Telegraph as one of the best steeplechases seen in Hawke’s Bay. The following are the results :—
Handicap Hurdle Race — Pyramus 1, Oaklands 2, Waterbury 3. Won easily ; four others started, including Darnley, who finished sixth.
Hawke’s Bay Steeplechase, of 300 sovs ; second horse to receive 50 sovs, and third horse 20 sovs from the stake —Tauraekaiti 1, Oeo 2, Otaieri 3. Sentinal, Rough, lyal, Pursestring, Worth, Yardman, To Ata, and Duadine also started. Oceola and Waterbury wore scratched. Rough and Te Ata were the first away, but Rough fell at the first jump. Ival baulked at the water jump, and Te Ata ran off. but got on to the course again. Worth baulked at the third jump, and Duadine was also out of it. Yardman went to the front, followed by Otaieri, Oeo, Pursestring, and Seotinel, in that order. Yardman led over the water jump, Otaieri next, Tauraekatai third, and then followed Oeo, Pursestring, Sentinel, and Te Ata. The order was maintained for some distance, until Otaieri, who was well backed, went to the front. Yardman afterwards dispensed him of this position, however, and Tauraekaiti, remained handy, looking dangerous. Coming home the last time there was great excitement, for Sentinel, who had been lying back, came with a rush and to->k command. The race was reckoned all over, bar accidents, but that accident took place and Tauraekaitai went up and challenged Sentinel, and a great finish was promised, when Sentinel’s jockey cut the very last jump too flue, and the horse ran off and Tauraekaitai won. Oeo a good second, and Otaieri, who was done, third, the rest nowhere. Time, 7miu. 48aeo. On the machine, £1550; on the winner, £391; dividend £3 Ils. Hepburn's Duadine won the Maiden Steeplechase, with Darnley second, and Rough third. Dividend £2O 15s. Ladies’ Bracelet—Durus 1, Norton 2. Lady’s Maid 3. Won easily ; dividend £l3 19s.
