FOOTBALL.

TO-DAY’S MATCH—PIRATES V. I TURANGANUI. The Pirate Club’s representatives, accompanied by a number of visitors—making a party of about 25—arrived yesterday morning from Napier. The little steamer Te Kapu, in which the footballers made the passage, bad a good trip up, and the visitors landed in fair condition for the coming tussle. They were shown round the place by the local footballers, and made as jolly as circumstances would permit. They seem a fine «et of fellows, the team being— Fullback—Coghlan. Three-quarters — Caldwell, Caulton, and O’Connell. Half-backs—Yates, O’Connell, and Cowell. Forwards—Kdtght, McDowall, Reardon, MoSherry, Downey, Cunningham, Shannahan, and Wrighton. With the rest they have had after their trip they will be able to take the field in the pink of condition, and make the contest as warm as the redoubtable Pirate Club has ever been able to make the game tor opponents that would not allow themselves to be danced round. The local fifteen have to play under some disadvantage, through losing some of the best men at rather short notice, and they have not been able to train as they should have done. But there is no doubt they will make the game an interesting one, and whichever side wins must reckon on a well deserved victory. In our notes on Thursday Hope’s name was accidentally omitted, and at this stage he may safely be left to win his laurels on the field this afternoon. A smoke concert is to be held this evening, and the visitors are expected to weigh anobor for home again about midnight. THE PIRATES Have a record unsurpassed by any Club in the colony, and the following particulars regarding them will no doubt prove of interest to our local 1 knights of the leather.’ The Olub was formed six years ago by a number of apprentices, and they succeeded in annexing the junior oup the first season they put a team into the field. The year following saw the Pirates competing for noth the senior and junior trophies, but they were not successful in either competition, finishing third in the senior class, and losing the Junior oup by one point. The year after they showed signs of improvement by making a tie with the County Club for the senior championship, and again winning tho junior trophy, In 1889 and 1890 both the seniors and the juniors were undefeated, but this season their ranks have been considerably weakened by many of their prominent players leaving the district, and both seniors and juniors have suffered one defeat each, the former at the hands of Te Ante, and the latter by the Napier Club. THE TURANGANUI CLUB Is now only in its fourth season, having been originally started by boys just leaving school. It flourished like the proverbial green bay-tree, supplanted the Union Club, and galvanised life into the dry bones of the Gisborne Club, whioh’hae since found it a formidable though friendly rival. They have always come well to the front during the short time the cup matches have been a local institution —they battle gamely, take their defeats honorably and their victories with becoming modesty. They have had one dressing down from the Pirates, and it will only be due to superiority on the other side if the compliment is not gracefully returned this afternoon.
