COUNTY COUNCIL.

The above body met yesterday afternoon. Present: Ors dark (Chairman), Gray, Orr, Wethered, and Tuohy. The Waerenga-a-hika Schoo! Committee wrote asking that the culvert on the Mission road might be cleared.—The engineer said that the road under notice was not a legal road.—Or Gray mentioned that the road benefited many persons, and he proposed that pipes should be supplied, which was seconded by the Chairman,—Or Tuohy moved as an amendment, and Or Wethered seconded, that the Council disclaim any liability ; this was carried. The Poverty Bay Road Board drew attention to the boghole at the Makauri well— The Clerk was instructed to reply stating that the part complained of was in their district, and consequently they must effect the necessary repairs, J. Caesar wrote asking the Council whether they could not make a new track over Kanikanae, as the track proposed was impassable, owing to the great slips.—Decided to inform Mr Caesar that tho Council would do what they could when the weather permitted to restore the road. Accounts were passed as follows :—B. Knox £9O ss, Weir and Sellars £lOO, M. McLeod £9, P. McLoughlin £7 3s, J. Chute £1 4s, Colbert and Kiely £7 14s, E. Deyery £4 15s, Engineer's sundries £3 2s, B. Brooking £3 15s, Kennedy and Evans £2 3s Bd, T, Adams £2 8s 3d, Richardson Bros. £l2

19s, J. Boland £24, Victoria Insurance Company £7 10s. The Engineer, in his report, stated that the track formerly used for dray traffic leading to the Waiomoko Valley had been out off in consequence of Mr Maokley fencing his property, which debarred Messrs Druce and Campbell from getting a dray to their homesteads. He estimated that £6O would be required to open a new road. He said it would be necessity to erect a new bridge on the Mangatokerau road, the present one being dangerous for traffic. The Engineer also mentioned that it would be necessary to construct a culvert on the main road near Kaiteratahi.

In regard to the road leading to Waimoko the matter was left over for the present, but it was agreed to write and ask Messrs Druce and Campbel if they would pay a portion of the cost. The Engineer was authorised to attend to the Kaiteratahi drain and get it enlarged, and the Council ordered that the bridge at Mangatokerau be done and charged to land fund account.

The Chairman said that a separate rate would have to be levied in regard to the Taruheru footbridge, that was if they were ordered to contribute to its maintenance. He mentioned that the settlers in the outlying districts were not benefited by the bridge, and cited coses, especially Mr Caesar's, when people are paying rates and have not even a bridle track passable to get to their property. The Chairman reported that the overdraft would be charged at the rate of 7 per cent: from the first July. The following tenders were received for a fence at KaiteratahiGregg and Co 19s fid and 23s per chain, A. Gordon 22s fid and £1 14s fid per chain, R. Brown £1 2s and £1 9a per chain, B. Lloyd £L and £1 8s per chain. The tender of Gregg and Co. was accepted. Cr Tuohy drew attention to the river encroachment at Murewai. He said that Mr Johnson considered that by expending £3 it would preserve the banks.—The Engineer did not think that any small works would be of any benefit.—The Council, after slight discussion, agreed to give £8 towards any work Mr Johnson may undertake to break the course of tho river. The Council decided to make another application for the amount due by the Waiapu Council, the money to be paid without delay; it was also agreed that the Council pay one half of the Clerk’s fidelity bond in the Victoria Company.
