A Sad Case.

At the Police Court yesterday, Mr Booth being on the Bench, a very old Maori named Pera Titonga was charged with having stolen ten shillings from Mr Trafford’s hut at Murewai. Pera is supposed to be nearly a hundred years old, and is credited with being the first man to bring in news of the raids being made by Te Kooti in troublous days of of old. He is now apparently suffering from senile decay, and it was pitiable to see the poor old fellow getting himself into such a scrape. A fine of four times the amount stolen was inflicted on the accused, who pleaded guilty. He looked a sad object, with his stooping gait, dirty and ragged clothes, and bare feet. When asked why he had committed the theft, he replied, “ I’m very old-—can’t you see I’m mad ?”
