In the Grand National meeting at Christ church yesterday the racing was interesting throughout, the favorites being upset in nearly every event. There were a great many casualties during the day, the most serious occurring in the National Steeplechase, when Allen, the rider of Morok, broke his collarbone. In the Welter flat Handicap the horse Lightning broke his fetlock, and was shot, and Waihi was so injured in the Grand National Hurdles that it is likely he will have to be destroyed. Freeman won the chief event, and is a very popular horse. Daring the day £7050 passed through the totalisator, about £6OO more than last year. Oouranto, winner of the hurdle race of 200 sovs., paid a dividend of £lO Bs, In the Maiden Steeplechase Darnley was second. The steamer Industry, which left the Bluff for Sydney at 1.30 p.m on Wednes day, with a full cargo of grain, put back, to port at 10 o’clock last night, leaking. The vessel touched the rocks when

The vessel at the time of touching, was out of thechannel, but the Captain states that he had to give way to cutters entering the harbor, and in doing so the tide touched the vessel on the port bow, taking her in shore. The Industry is alongside the wharf—she is making water freely, and steam pumps are kept going constantly. The extent of the damage to the hull and cargo is not yet known fully. Four-fifths of the cargo was shipped by Invercargill firms.
