The Gisborne Standard AND COOK COUNTY GAZETTE Published every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday Morning.

Tuesday, August 18, 1891. THE ’FRISCO MAILS.

Bo just and fear net; Let all the ends thou aim’at at be thy country’s, Thy God’s, and truth’s.

Gisborne Is unfortunate in the matter of arrangements for the despatch of the monthly mail from San Francisco. Not once, but on nearly every occasion when the mail arrives in Auckland the arrangements are such that the mail is not received until a week later, while by the West Coast service people in the South Island are very often able to get their share of the mail several days before a port 24 hours' steam from Auckland. The mail which arrived in Auckland last week has already been delivered in towns at a much greater distance, but Gisborne people must wait till next Friday before their portion of the mail can be distributed. In this special instance the Union Company’s steamer only left Auckland a few hours before the mail steamer, though the latter was a day late in leaving San Francisco. The mails are now due in Auckland on Thursday, and it is not expecting any thing unreasonable when business men and others interested in this district think that arrangements might well be made, by the delay of the steamer for a few hours, to enable the mail to be brought on to Gisborne by the ordinary weekly steamer. This would bring us] in touch to some extent with the the prompt despatch that is now supposed to be characteristic pf postal arrangements. The Union steamer which arrives in Gisborne on the Friday can always be in Napier next morning, no matter what time she weighs anchor from this port. As the San Francisco mail only arrives once a month we think that the ppnvenience of the people of this rising district might commend itself to the attention of those in whose power it is to grant this boon. It seems ridiculous that in these days of rapid communication our mails should lie in Auckland for a full week, np matter ’how important may be its contents to many individuals, as well as to the business community.
