POLITICAL GOSSIP.

[special to the standard.] Wellington, last night. It is now regarded as very probable that the session will terminate on Saturday, and Parliament be prorogued on the following Tuesday. Mr Smith is to ask the Premier whether he proposes before the closing of the session, to take the necessary steps to remove from the records of the House, the motion of censure recently passed on the late leader of the Opposition. Postmaster General cannot concede to local bodies the right to send delayed telegrams to Government up to 30 words, at the sixpenny rate. The newly-appointed Agent General left for Christchurch by tho Ruapehu yesterday afternoon, presumably to make his arrangements to start for London.

The Ocean Mail Resolutions, as passed, provide for a fortnightly 'Frisco service, Auckland being the port of call. The proposal to give effect to the penny within the colony, and a half-penny rate on newspapers to Australia, did not meet with bo much opposition in the Council as was expected, hon. gentlemen agreeing that while the time was inopportune for such remission of taxation, the responsibility of making a reduction in the revenue should he thrown on the Government.

The Electoral Bill was again under consideration in Committee in the Legislative Council yesterday. On Mr Pharazyn’s motion, the clause giving a public holiday on polling day was excised by 24 to 5.
