METROPOLITAN STAKES. Sydney, September 15. The Metropolitan Stakes resulted Chaafe’s Yowl (P. Chaafe) ... 1 Miller’s Sunshine (S. Chaafe) 2 Rigby’s Magnus (Moore) ... 3 The other starters were—Highborn, Elymas, Mantilla, Werong, Lancer, Empire, Grenadier, Gipsy Girl, Silver Knight, Kilmore, and Transparent. Batting—3 to 1 against Magnus, Yowl, Highborn and Sunshine ; 8 to 1 Elmos ; 10 to 1 Lancet and Werong. At the first attempt the horses were sent away to an excellent start, Magnus and Werong being the first to move, with Kilmore, Transparent, Highborn, and Empire together next, Lancer being slow to move. Entering the straight, the order was Werong, Kilmore, Magnus, Transparent, and Highborn, waich was maintained -down the straight, and as they swept past the stand Werong was leading by a length and a half, and pulling double. Then came Transparent, Kilmore, and Magnus, all level, with Yowl, Grenadier, and Empire elus‘ored together, Mantilla. Gipsy Girl, and Lanoer bringing up the rear. Nearing the mile post Werong was still in the van, with Kilmore, Yowl, and Transparent handy, but here the latter fell, and gave the jockey a severe shaking. Along the back stretch Werong and Kilmore were leading, closely pressed by Magnus and Yowi, at whose heels were Elymas, Highborn, and Sunshine, Lancer, Grenadier and Gipsy Girl tailing off last Coming up the hill Magnus asserted himself, followed by Yowi and Elymas, and showed the way into the straight, but at the distance the latter pair were on terms with the leader, and Sunshine had joined the front division. Nearing the winning post Yowi drew out, and won a good race by half a length from Sunshine, who was a length and a half in front of Magnus. Then came Elymas, Highborn, Laneer, and Mantilla, in the order named, with Silver Knight last. Time, 3m 335.
