The Gisborne Standard AND COOK COUNTY GAZETTE PUBLISHED EVERY TUESDAY, THURSDAY, AND Saturday Morning.

Saturday, October 17, 1891. THE ELECTORAL BOUNDARIES.

Be just and fear not; Let all the ends thou afca’at at be thy oountry’g, Thy God’s, and truth’s.

The alteration of the electoral boundaries on the recent census returns is rather more favorable to this district than the previous arrangement, by which Gisborne and Tauranga Boroughs were comprised in the one electorate, together with many outlying districts at a great distance from the centres. The new boundaries are certainly not as we would like them, but they are so much more satisfactory that we must rest content for the time being. The next election will be conducted on the altered boundaries. There is no doubt much greater affinity of interest between the scattered portions of the new district than in the one which existed when the last election was fought. The facilities for intercommunication are much better, and the ridiculous feature of having a dividing boundary on the Gisborne plain is now done away. It would be idle to make use of the theme to speculate upon the bearings of past or. future elections. Had the boundaries remained as they were prior to the last election there is not much doubt that the victorious party would have had a more signal victory than they had when they had also to contend with a natural feeling of localism. There is no prospect of any change in the constitution of the House in the near future, and things can be allowed to take their course without excessive joy or sorrow being felt. We hope that from henceforth the Conservative representative of the Southern portion of the district will not suddenly cease to feel an interest in the local affairs of that portion of the district he represents, but which is now cut off from the constituency which returned him. As far as Mr Kelly is concerned we believe that the local interests of the East Coast will always have his attention, no matter what constituency he specially represents.
