V.R.C. DERBY AND MELBOURNE CUP. PIGEONTOE CUP FAVORITE. Melbourne, Oct. 30. Oxide is second favorite for the Derby at 3 to 1. Aster, Affiance, Steadfast, and Lady Carbine have been withdrawn from the Derby. At Mentone Pigeontoe is credited with having run two miles and forty yards in 3mins 40s ecs, Bst up, and he is now first favorite for the Cup at 100 to 12 offered, w.hile 100 to 10 is wanted. Paris, Malvolio, and Correze are each quoted at 100 to 10. Owing to sustaining a severe injury to one of his legs, Forest King, the runner up for Caulfield Cup, has been scratched for the Melbourne Cup. N.Z. CUP QUOTATIONS. CHBisrcHUßca, last nigh*. Betting on the New Zealand Cup is still very flat. Freedom still holds the position of first favorite, 4 to 1 being offered against his chance. Craekshot is next in demand at 5 to 1, and the others range from 6 to 10. Melbourne, Wednesday. Another drizzling morning, and consequently very little work of importance was done, principally 'half mile spurts being indulged in preparatory to the finishing up gallops to.morrow. Muriel, however, was an exception to the rule, as the Bathurst mare ran two miles single-handed in 3min. dSrec., moving freely. Prelude spun stoutly over nine furlongs, going very nicely; this mare has improved out of all knowledge. King Olaf looks all the better for yesterday's gallop. Foulsham was present this morning with the whole of his team. G’Naroo was steadily backed last night at 100 to 4 for the Melbourne Cup. Towards the closing hour Paris receded again, 100 to 12 being offered. He was present on the track this morning looking very gay. Pigeon tee has eased slightly, while 100 to 2 has been taken about Greygown, Rumors are current that Yarran, by Epi gram—Nellie, is Mi S. G. Cook’s Derby colt, not The Bebel, in consequence of which several hundreds to one have been laid against the latter. Yarran, who is trained in seclusion at Sandringham, is in magnificent fettle. Penance is still receding in the quotations for theV.R.C. Blue Biband, but Oxide and Stromboli are firm at 9 to 2 each Miss Lang's Pigeontoe is declining in favor for the Melbourne Cup, and 100 to 6 is freely offered against him, Sternohaser is absolutely friendless for ths Derby at 100 to 5, but an occasional 100 to 8 is taken about Tirailleur tor the Cup. THE WEIGHTS FOR THE G.R.C.’s SPRING MEETING. Mb J. 0- Evett has again given those of the clever division, who so invariably know so much, something over which to chew the cud in his allotments for the coming meeting. There is an openness and " fair show to all ’’ wbioh will oertain’y tend to make the meeting one of exoitement and interest. In the Flying, Pouawa heads the list with 8.0, but taking into consideration her sterling qualities and her special liking for the thr e-quarter flutter, it is difficult to see how the handicapper could have more lenientlv treated her. Stanley (Anteros —Aconite) can hardly have cause to grumble, being 2lbs under the little Foul Play mare, althongh having to accord weight to Papakura and the remaining five. Brought out as his owner can bring him, Stanley’s chance should be a good one, Papakura at 7 5, and fit and well on the day, has been justly treated. Pekapu (Daniel O'Rourke —Frivolity) has scored one win and a second during her short career, and 7 3 is therefore not out of the way. Assassin is said by some to have been very lamentably treated, but I think that those lower down, Cairngorm, Creeper, and Hexham, have bean dealt with equally well, and that taking the handicap throughout the weak point does not lie where it is asserted to. For the Grandstand Handicap Pani has been awarded 99, and asked to give Brigand 131bs; this is hardly so much out of the way as the latter giving Stockfish only 7lbs and then the son of Piscatorious and Lacteal being compelled to concede weight to Zanzibar, Avis, Pouawa, etc , etc- I certainly expect the division under Bst to furnish the winner. For the Hurdles Oeo heads the list with 12.4, and the way things look at present (though not altogether if things had been otherwise) I fancy tbe topweight will have little cause for grumbling at the finish. Duadine’s accident will of course pnt her back, and Aorere failed to put in an appearance at the P.B.T C.’s meeting. The Park Handicap brings out a list of thirteen, and the remarks above will sufficiently apply to those engaged, with one exception—that of Fitzjamee. Had Mr Parsons’ old warrior been anything like himself 7.12 would not have stopped him. CJ.C. SPRING MEETING. The following acceptances, general entries, and further payments have been received for the above race meeting Spring Hurdles—Couranto, Christmas, Freeman, Somnambulist, Harkaway, Norton, Cheshunt, Lyndoors, and Isidore. Stewards Stakes—Merrie England, Prime Warden, Whisper, Boulanger, Clanranald, Betins, Florrie, Pallieer, Strephon, Inez, Morpheus, Heather Bell, Huguenot, Conjuror, Begina, Corronade, Von Tempsky, Bicblake, Miss George, The Idler, Hippomenes, and Emmason. New Zealand Cup—Craekshot 9 2, Freedom 8.12, Cynisoa 8 3, Blizzard 7.9, Oruchfield 7-6, Whisper 75, Cajolery 618, Flinders 6,11, Rosefeldt 6 10, British LioDL.fi 8, Thame and Dilemma 6 2. Canterbury Derby—Morpheus, Florrie. Eros, Bosefeldt, Flinders, Cajolery, and Lehel. Canterbury Cup — Cynisca, Craekshot, Cruchfield, Freedom, Flinders, Cajolery, and Lebel, Buff and Black writes :—A paragraph has been going round the colonial press to the effect that Mr Luckie, secretary of the H. B. Jockey O'nb, had received a letter from the Premier, Mr Ballance, stating that the Club had no right to charge over 10 per pent, on tota'isator investments at Its last meeting, This is absolutely untrue, for no oommunioation of any kind baa been received by Mr Luckie on the subject. No member of the Government would have any right to write such a letter, for the Act does not state that the extra taxation Is to coms out of the 10 per cent.
