MELANESIAN MISSION FINANCE
FURTHER £2,000 A YEAR NEEDED Auckland, Aug. 19. An increase in income of at least £2,000 a year is required by the Melanesian Mission Finance Board if its work in the South Sea Islands is not to be hampered. In pointing out this in the annual report the board stated it was faced with constant demands tor supplies, but although there was no evidence of extravagance funds for those supplies were not forthcoming. In response to orders for “rigid economy’’ the board had endeavoured to keep down expenses and had actually cut down orders for Island schools, with the result that Native lads must be turned away from the teachings of the faith and all that that meant. The accounts show that the excess of expenditure over income for the year ended June 30th. was £lOB6. The income for the year was £32,567, of which £16,887 was collected in England, £13,144 contributed by New Zealand, and £1237 by Australia. The balance came from various funds and other sources.
