HAWKE’S BAY COUNCIL. ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of the Hawke’s Bay County Council mi held in Napier to-day. Present: Messrs F. B. Logan (chairman), T. Mason Chambers, C. Lassen, N. P. Ericksen, C. C. Smith, S. Bennett, W. Tucker, 8. Palmer, G. B. Beamish, and W. Turner. Leave of absence was granted to Mr R. Harding. The chairman’s action was approved in recommending that the rollowing be main highways: RedcliffePakowhai, Havelock-Paki Paki. Na-pier-Taihape. Tenders were accepted for dram cleaning as follow: —Clive. H. and W. Hollyman, 2/3 per chain; Pakowhai, Young and Ramsay 3/10 per chain; Meeanee, R. Harbottle, 2/per chain. The Public Works Department wrote approving of the acceptance of tenders for the formation and metalling on the Te Onepu-Raukawa road. 'The Lands and Survey Department advised that thirds would be payable on lands at Waimarama in July next. —Received. The District Highwys Council advised that a contract had been let for the new bridge over the Te Ngaru stream, near Tangoio. The District Highways Council .advised that the Highways Board regretted being unble to assist in the cost of an engineering survey on the Eskdale-Te Ponue road.—The council decided to instruct the engineer (Mr R. Puflett) to give a report on an estimated cost of the survey. The Hastings Borough Council rt> newed its application for a grant-in aid for the dental clinic.—Cr. Lassen stated that the Hawke’s Bay Education Board had taken the matter up with th® Minister of Internal Affairs to have legislation passedl enabling the council to make a contribution towards the clinic. The chairman said it was interesting to see bodies asking for legislation to be passed enabling the council to make all kinds of grants-in-aid. After further discussion the council held over the question of making a grant. The Taradale Town Board advised that it was willing to put a hard surface on a length of the Greenmeadows footpath if the council would supply the material.—The council agreed to the proposal subject to the work being done to the approval of its engineer. The Hawke’s Bay Automobile Association wrote suggesting that an electrie light be installed at the junction of the embankment and Taradale road.—To be installed. 4 similar request was received for the installation of an electric light on the Meeanee bridge.—Cr. Eriksen pointed out that in time of flood settlers were obliged to spend the whole night working in the dark, filling bags of earth and piling them on the bank. The Power Board had stated that it would cost £l4 to instal a single light, which cost, he considered, was excessive. Members were in sympathy with the request? and agreed that something should be done. The matter was left in the hands of Cr. Ericksen and the chairman to confer with the Hawke’s Bay Power Board. The council agreed to make a grant of £lO to the Hawke’s Bay branch of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union towards the cost of the Empire Farmers’ visit.
