RUGBY FOOTBALL

THE H.B. v. BRITAIN MATCH

GENERAL ARRANGEMENTS PRAISED. “ALL PULLED TOGETHER.” Much has been heard of the British match at Napier and practically every feature, exeept one, has already been praised; this latter, however, is deserving of comment too the arrangments made by the Hawke’s Bay Rugby Union for the match. As selector and manager of the Hawke’s Bav. team, Mr. N. A. McKenzie was a disinterested party as far as the arrangements were concerned and last evening he took the opportunity of extending congratulations to the union on tho excellence of this aspect. Mr. McKenzie stated that ho was extending congratulations on behalf of tho many people who had approached him with remarks to the effect that it was a. real pleasure to attend the game. With such a large crowd to handle some expected that there would be a little trouble but such was not the case, and they felt that the union was deserving of , praise. Mr. J. W. Norrie (chairman), replied that the secret rf their success was that every member of the committee did his job and they all pulled together. H.B. UNION. MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE MEETING. Tho weekly meeting of the management committee of the Hawke’s Bay Rugby Union was held last night Present: Messrs J. W. Norrie (chairman). J. W. Callaghan, D. Corbett, N. A. McKenzie, B. Tweedie, H Brown. W. O'Neill, A. W. H. Kina. A. E. Young, H. V. Phillips, and A. D. Lynch. The Napier Boys' High Scheel was granted permission to play Gisoorne High School on their grounds on July 24. Napier High School third grade forfeited to T.C.0.8. for to-day’s game in the competitions. M. 8.0.8.’s fourth grade forfeited to Taradalo. Confirmation was given for the Dannevirke Sub-Union to play Bush on July 26. Messrs B. Tweedie and A. D. Lynch were appointed managers of the Hawke’s Bay team on tho South Island tour. FOURTH TEST. SEATS FOR H.B. SUPPORTERS. The allocation of seats for Hawke's Bay for the fourth test match at Wellington is causing some anxiousness among members of the H.B. Rugby Union which has made application for 100 seats. Mr. W. Anderson (secretary) stated that-when in Wellington early in the week he gleaned information that there was every possibility that Hawke’s Bay would not receive the 100 seats applied for. The union decided to communicate with the New Zealand Union asking for immediate advice as to Hawke's Bay’s allocation. The question of auxiliary stands was also mentioned in the event of such stands being erected and reserved. The chairman (Mr. J. W. Norrie) will make application on Hawke’s Bay’s behalf. INTER-SCHOOL GAME. NAPIER v. DANNEVIRKE. The home side were the victors yesterday afternoon in the annual Rugby fixture between Dannevirke High School and Napier High School by three to nil. ’1 he game, which was played on the Napier School’s ground, was hard and very even, and both sides played great lootball. In the greater part of the first half Napier were on the attack, and came near to scoring several times. In the latter stages Dannevirke had thq home side fenediug, but neither was able to score. On the change-over, the Dannevirke full-back mulled, and McPhee got over, the kick failing. Napier, still pressing, were met with a stubborn defence when Selby was removed from the field, and Dannevirke resumed with 14 men. Dannevirke were unlucky in not scoring from several brilliant sorties. Napier carried play into tho opposing unfortunate in not scoring, his short punt past the full-back going too far. Tomoana followed up, but missed, and a spell of up and down play, with advantage to neither side, ended in the score remaining unchanged at three points to nil. Mr M. F. Woodward was referee.
