MONEY IN GOATS

USE FOR FOREST LAND. - A recent visit to Bayley and Sons’ big tanning factory, Sydney, made it obvious what big sums Australia loses in bad branding and cattle horning of hides. Seventy-five per cent, of Australian hides are, more or less injured whereas °n New Zealand hides the loss is only 5 per cent., and no Indian hides are injured. Large numbers of Indian goat skins are used at these works, their value being 5s 6d per skin, against Australian at 5s per skin. Mr Bayley pointed out what a spleudid opening there was on Australia’s poorest land for goat farming; 5s a skin can be obtained, and four kids a year may be expected. It was a most interesting visit and an excellent quality leather is being turned out.
