LATE SPORTING
ELLERSUE TRACK NOTES SOME FAST GALLOPS. NIGHTMAROH IN GREAT FORM. [Per Press Association.!. Auckland, December 20. Conditions were ideal for training work at Ellerslie this morning, me bulk of the gallops being carried out on the course proper, where the poles were 40 feet out from the rails. The going was fast and several excellent gallops were recorded, the best performances being registered by Nightmarch, who put up a first-class effort over a mile, and Count Palatine, Star Stranger, Cylinder and Vertigern, who each went seven furlongs. The best times established by the sprinters were those of Hunting Pay, Royal Tea, Tenderden and Autopay. » T • On The Course Proper. Lady Pam was the first to work, and was timed to run sis furlongs in 1.18 4-5- Cape Gold assisted her over the last live furlongs, which were traversed in 1.4. Eager Rose ran the last sis furlongs of her work in 1.18 3-5, doing it well. * • *
Hunting Day completed a halfmile sprint in 49 3-5 sec, Love Song got to the end of six furlongs in 1.19, finishing on well.
* • » Karangapai and Leasehold were together in front of Cieina’s King after completing six furlongs in 1.20 3-5.
Tenterden, the Railway Handicap candidate, ran half a mile in 49 3-5 sec, doing her work nicely. Star Stranger and Cylinder began from the old mile post and finished up the last seven furlongs of their task in 1.31 3-5. There was very little between them at the finish. Star Stranger was going in good style. Tetrachate and Foot Rule ran five furlongs in 1.3 4-5, practically together. Gay Crest and Sir Mond jumped off at the mile post and after running, the first half-mile in 51 3-5 sec, finished up in 1.34- Gay Crest pleased better, being a length and a-half in front.
Royal Tea displayed a lot of speed over five furlongs, which he covered in 1.3 3-5. He went particularly well,
Grecian and Appledore were on terms at the end of six furlongs in 1.21 2-5. Brampton, Imperial Prince, and Tambourine finished together at the end of a mile in 1.55.
Titanetta was a shade in front of Speedfast at the end of four furlongs in 51 4-ssec. Praetor was in front of Rafflight after five furlongs in 1.4. Merry Lu was allotted a seven furlongs task • she ran the first three in 39 3-ssec. and completed the task in 1.36.
Count Palatine and Vertigern jumped off at the seven-furlong post, running the first three furlongs in 38 4-ssecs. and the full distance in 1.31 4-5. Count Palatine, who had the better of the weight, was going much the easier. Neil and Alloy were together after running four furlongs from a flying start in 51 4-ssecs. Royal Baby had Autopay as company over three furlongs, which took 38secs.; they were on terms. » • » After Breakfast, Steady Fire was in front of Llanore over six furlongs in 1 18 3-5. Steady Fire went well. • * • The best gallop was credited to Nightmarch (R. Reed), who began from th? post with Bennie to assist him. He ran the first furlong in 13 l-ssecs., three in 38secs., and reached the half-mile post in 50 3-5 secs. True Shaft joined in at this stage and Nightmarch and he finished together. The time for the mile was 1.42 1-5, the last four furlongs being covered in 51 3-ssees. Nightmare!) galloped very evenly throughout and was going particularly well at the finish. Bennie was eased up over the last part.
Gay Idea and Bizarre ran three furlongs in 39 4-ssecs., and six furlongs in 1.20 together. Gay . Cockade (Mcßae) was sent over a mile and a Quarter with Glenhaupo to assist him over the last half-mile. He ran the full distance in 2.17 2-5, the last round in 2.7 2-5. the last seven in 1.34, and the final half-mile in 52secs. HASTINGS NOTES. This morning, on the Hastings track, while doing an exercise gallcp, the Leighton—Fera three-year-old filly had the misfortune to break her leg and consequently was destroyed. This filly was showing exceptional promise, and on the eve of the local meetings her connections must be deemed most unfortunate,
Acmil jarred a joint on Thursday morning and may not recoyer in time for the Waipukurau meeting.
