TH E LOW LEVEL TUNNEL.

(To THE EDITOB INANOAHUA TiMRS.) Sib, — The letter and comment — Sia« mese twins — which appear in yesterday's issue of the Inangahua Herald, in re the Low Level Tunnel, are on a par with the interest which that paper has throughout displayed with respect to the undertaking. It seeks to excuse its neglect in not reporting the late proceed* ings hy throwing, or ratber attempting to ' east imputations upon the action taken. It insinuates that the provisional direo»

tors were appointed at a hole-and corner meeting, bat it is very strange that th« meeting should have been so largely at* tended by the public. This fa* tbea pro*es tbat anyone who feels real in* terest in tbe undertaking could have been present if he so desired, bat farther than this, the meeting was publicly aanoonced and not held at a late hoar, bat at the boar that soefa meetings are asaally held in Reefton and elsewhere. So much then for this accusation against the promoters* As to the imputation of improper ap« pointments having been made; this mast either be levelled at some members of the directory or the secretary, bofe as the whole of the appointments were made in public meeting assembled, and with the unanimous voice of all present, I cannot help regarding tbe effort made to provide the public with an excuse for holding out of the undertaking, as exceedingly imprudent. Any attempt to shake pub* lie confidence in the ability and integrity of those appointed cannot but damage the prospects of floating the concern. As for the directors themselves, tbe insinua* tions thrown out are not likely to trouble them much, as they will do doubt treat them with the contempt they deserve. I am, &c, OBSERVER.
