Hotel being destroyed by fire. The Victoria lose £400 on the buildings, and South British £450 ditto. The Hanseatie £600 on the stock and furniture. The house vras a very old one. Auckland, April 23. The second day's races were well attended, several hundred more. being present, among; whom were tbe Hon. Messrs Oliver, Whitaker, Bryce, and Sheehan. Two totalisators were seized by the police, and four men concerned in their working was arrested. The Minister of Public Works has re« commended the commencement of the opening road leading from Pekena Kailway Station to Miranda, by authorising the expenditure of £500. There is still a considerable amount of Government land on the lineGisbobne, April 23. The E.M. fiourt yesterday again presented an undignified scene. The ease against A. T. Hardy, for perjury, was proceeding, During the examination of a witness for the prosecution, Mr Matthew Price, one of the Magistrate's presiding, expressed astonishment at the witness recollecting what had transpired about three months ago. Witness objected to discredit being thrown upon his testimony. Mr Price replied that witness' recollection was better than a shorthand reporter's notes. Mr Bees, solicitor for prosecution remonstrated with the Bench, and stited such scenes tended to bring the administration of justice into contempt, and made it difficult to conduct cases in a proper way. Mr Price forthwith committed Mr Rees, and ordered the bailiff to takp him in charge, which he did. Mr Eees consented to the payment of a fine, appearing in Court; for his clients in the afternoon. Chbistchttbch, April 21. Scab has broken out among the sheep on Mr Edgar Joues' run on the south side of rivers Hope and Wairoa, caused by sheep crossing the riyer froia the northern side. E. Foster, Sheep Inspector, recommended last year in his repoit on the sheep in the Amuri <3is* trie', that the run on the north side should be fenced to effectually prevent sheep crossing, and that the sheep should be killed as soon as possible. His instructions were not acted upon, the result being that sheep have crossed and disease is fast spreading. The squatters in the district are actively engaged mustering and doing all that can be done to meet the difficulty.
