REGISTRATION.

Some smart writing has been indulged in of la'e over the fact that the elector 1 rolls, so far, show bat 79 896 names*, against 82,721, which was the number on tlio eld rolls. It has been inferred from 'hU that the number of registered elecors is 3.0D0 les than under the old system, but this does not Mlovr. For a long time past there has been no revision of the old rolls, the consequence being that they confain tlie names of many men who are dead or, bavingleft the districts for which they are registered, are probaMy rog : s» tered for other districts at the sama time. In the Thames electoral district, far ins stance, ihe number of names, on the roll has hacl to be reduced by nearly one-half from these causes, and thotish (bis probably is an fxtreme case, it is certain {hat the revision of the rolls must have had the effect of diminishing the nanjps very considerably. Still there can be little doubt that many persons hare neglected the duty of registration under the impression that because their names are on the old ro'l they will, as a matter of course, be transferred to the new roll. This is a delusion, and to those who are acting upon it we say — go and register without delay. The Register will, no doubt, transfer to the new rolls such names as he is sure of; but, as his other occupations preclude the possibility of his going in search of information, all who do not wish to run the risk of disfranchisement should call on him at once. Names i will be received at any time, for herein the new Act differs from the old.
