Mr Williams moved as an amendment, that as compensation bad already been passed to three persons in that Riding for a like work, that the present one was equally entitled to consideration, and that the matter be referred to the Public Works Committee, Mr Byrne would oppose the motion upon principle. j The amendment was withdrawn, and the resolution put and carried. Letter read from J. Coglan, claiming thirteen weeks wages on Boatman's road, £39. The Engineer, in reply to the Chair* man, said that Coglan had never been authorised by him to do the work. From Amelia Low, askiug the Council to grant £6 or £8 charitable aid to enable her to reach her friends. She had been in receipt of charitable aid for sis or eight months, but the payment had been discontinued. A long discussion ensued. Mr Caples moved that the Chairman be empowered to deal with the application. The motion was then put and carried. An insulting letter was read from J. Roxburgh in regard to a contract held by one O'Hanlan. A long discussion ensued, v and an opinion was unanimously expressed that the language of the letter was most offen% sive. Besolved that in future do contract money be paid until after the next meets ing of the Council following the complex tion of such contract. Letter read from the County Engineer, asking the Council to reconsider its decision in relation to the combination of offices. Mr M'Gaffin was inclined to think that the duties imposed upon the EngU neer were rather excessive. Moved by Mr Davies, tbat,*the"Coun« cil cannot at present depart from the determination already arrived at. Mr Williams was of opinion that no extra assistance was required at present. There was no seconder to the resolution. The correspondence as read was then received. Mr M'Gaffin presented a petition on behalf of Alfred Smith, and other resi» dents of the lower part of the time, asking the Council to take steps to prevent the encroaebmant of the river. The petition was ordered to sland over. The resolution tabled at a previous meeting levying a rate of Is. in the £ upon the annual value of all property in the County was confirmed. Eesolved that the application of Gil* mer and Seawright be not entertained, Moved by Mr Gallagher, that the reports of the finance committee "recom* mending the refund of the license money (o Brandt and others, be given effect to.
