From Mr Eevell, complaining of the manner in which Mr Brandt's ferry is worked, the proprietor and his man were both drunk on a recent occasion. From Thomas O'Eorke, re chair at Oxnam's. From Cullen and May, requesting that iheir work may be valued with a view of obtaining a progress payment. From Thomas O'Korke, re several matters in the Hampden Riding. From i'homas Lynch, offerine to erect a chair near Crushington for a certain amount. .From F. Brandt, in explanation re charge made against him by Mr Warden Revell. and denying the same. From Mr Nancarrow, re Mary Bren nan's passage money. Proposed by Mr Danes, seconded by Mr M'Gaffio, that the Chairman com municate with Mr Nancarrow, and res quest him to refund £1 13s, being amount paid Gilmer Bros, for Mary Brennan's coach fare. — Carried. From Robert Wolfe, asking for a refund of his license. Proposed by Mr Davies, seconded by Mr M'Gaffin, that the sum of £4 be paid E. Wolfe as a refund of his license. — Carried. From E, Ee^ves, in explanation re vote for Longford road. From County Clerk, Buller, re sate of bridge at White Cliffs. From E; Kirby, asking Council to compensate him for taking down his fence at Black's Point, Proposed by Mr Byrne, seconded by Mr M'Gaffin, and carried, that the subject matter of Kirby 's better be referred to the Engineer. From Albert Beard, claiming payment for four days' labor, &c. From Mr Blackett, Chief Engineer, re Nelson and Westport road. From Secretary to the Treasury, re subsidy, &c. From J. K. Slcan, drawing Council's attention to the amount of his account. From Mr Gardner, asking leave to absent himself from the meeting — Grnnted. Fiom Molloy, Willis, and Breen, asking Council for a progress payment of £24. Proposed by Mr Byrne, seconded by Mr M'Gaffin, and carried, that in the event of the Engineer giving a certifN cate for this amount the Chairman be empowered to deal with the matter. From J. I. Aiken, calling the Councils attention to the amount of his account. From George Barman, stating that he could not make the track to the Big Ifiver for the sura of £39. Proposed by Mr Byrne, seconded fey Mr Williams, and carried, that the Engi* neer be instructed to call tenders for construction of pack«track 6 feet wide, commencing at Carriboo and terminating at track laid rfi by Council from Reef* ton to Big River, Tenders to close on lOib November at noon. From F. Courtuey, slating that he was prepared to net as collector of tolls oil Westport road" for 10s. per week. Proposed by Mr Byrne, seconded by Mr Williams, and carried, that the consideration of Courtney's letter stand over till nest meeting. From A. Breen, asking Council to res pair road to Soldier's! Proposed by ?vlr Davies, seconded by Mr Williams, and carried, that two acres of the reserve asked for by Mr O'Neill be rented to him at a yearly rental of 10*. From Und»-r- Secretary Public Work?, re Giey bridges. Unsolved that the Chnirman corns mu'iioalo with the Minisier of Public Works, and inform him that this Council do not want to have nny con« ten] over the I ridge at the Grey river. From Mr Wise, calling attention to Ihe bad slate of repair of the Larry's Crrck track-. The Chairman was of opinion that the Council was not in a position to do very much in Ihe matter. Mr Trennery thought it was the duty of the Council to refer it to the Engineer,

Matter referred to Engineer accord* in-jly. From H. Duggan, re Bontmin's road. The Engineer said that he had served Dupg^n with a notice of discontinuance of his contract. The road was at the time in sueb a bad slate of repair thai, it was absolutely necessary to take the step in question, Moved by Mr Davies, seconded by Mr Trennery, that Mr Du~gnn be informed that his maintenance contract for the Boatman's road had been determined. Mr Williams said he had never heard any complaints about the road until after tlu waggons with the Welcome machinery went up. The motion was then put and carried. From Mr J: X, Sloan, claiming £60 for work done on the Lyell-Hatnpden road beyond the period of his maintenance contract. The Engineer said he did not authorise the work in question. Mr Trennery moved that the matter^ be referred to the County Solicitor for his opinion. Seconded by Mr Williams, and carried. The correspondence as read was re» i ceived. j Mr Davies presented a petition from the residents of Crushington complaining of the encroachment of the Inangahua river, and asking the crafes might be erected to divert the stream or that footbridges be erected to enable foot«pas« sengers to cross the branches. The petition was read and received. Mr Brencan presented a petition from the storekeepsof Eeefton, complaining of the state of the track between Maoii Gully and Green's old store, and praying that it be gravelled 3 feet wide. The committee appointed to consider the petitions of Lynch and others, and Harvey and others, for compensation. They could not see that Lynch had sus« lamed any damage through the action of the Council, and therefore recommended"' that ibeir claim be not entertained. With reference to the application of Irving, nnd Ifarvey for £27 10s. compensation, the commiitee recommended that the pets tioners be paid the som of £!O. The com* mittee concluded by recommending that no further applications of the kind for compensation be entertained. The report of the committee wes adopted. Mr Davies drew attention to the question of the ferry at Christy V. and moved that the Chairman communicate with Mr Minderman, and ascertain whether he is willing to rut a punt on the Insngahua river in consideration of a lease for four* teen years of the ferry reserve. In reply to a question, the Chairman said he had cot yet received any definite information from tho Governm°nt with respect to the question of subsidies? Mr Brennan moved, Mr M'Gaffin ses I conded, end it was carried, that in future no claim for compen?a(ion for work done without the authority of the Council, be entertained. The Chairman in reply to a question staled, that no reply had yet been re* ceived from Mr Warden Kevell relative io the collection of miner's right fees from Chinamen and others. On the motion of Mr M'Giffin, se* conded by Mr Brennan, and carried, the Engineer was instructed to report upon the state or the track to the Specimen Hill, and other mines in the locality. Mr' Davies moved, that £15 be voted for the purpose of introducing trout ova 1 into the Inangahua. and that the Chnirman, Mr Trennery, and the mover be a committee to carry out the object. Seconded by Mr Trennery, and car« ried. Mr Davies explained the nature of the damage done by river encroachment at Ciushington, and suggested that the mat* ter should be referred to the Engineer to renori. He said that the township was really in diint-'er. and suggested that the matter slu'UlJ be left with a committee to deal with before the nest meeting of the Council. Mr Trennery said there was no doubt ns to the urgency of tte work but he feared it was beyond the resources of the Council, The motion was seconded ty Mr M'Gaffin, pnil canicd. With reference to the petitions re Maori Gully track. Mr Davies moved. Mr Trennery se* c^nded, and it wj»s carried, that the Engi« iicer be instructed to call for tenders for (lie work. On the motion of Mr M'Gaffin, se» conded by Mr Williams, it was resolved that the Engineer report upon the matter of the petition of Alfred Smith and others, re the river encroachment near the hospital.
