NEW SOUTH WALES.

>. Mount Poole, which is near the Grey Range, 200 miles from Wilcania, which ii 740 miles vest of Sydney, making the total distance .from Sydney to the diggings, 940 miles. Men hare been work* ing near the Mount for some time. According to a report received by the Mining Department, ft party found 240z. in three days recently. Water is scarce in this part of the colony, and provisions difficu.lt to obtain. None but those who have £ proper outfit should join in the flash. A lead mine has been discovered at Dixon's Swamp, pear Albury. "Yfnpkvu., February 11. No more gold has come in from Mount Poole, but letters by yesterday's mail give good accounts. Evans and party, who found the Boz. nugget, have another nugget soz. Gold reported as being plentiful. People must be cautious on account of the scarcity of water. I^OJINT BBOWN GOLD DIGGINGS. A good deal of excitement has been created by the reports received in refer* enoe to the reported finds of gold at Mount Bcqwn in the Cfrey Range, about

200 miles from Wilcania. We have put* Itshed all the/ information it has been possible to obtain concerning the rush. This has hitherto been in a very scattered condition, and not nearly so full as we expected. We have made arrange" oients, ttowßver; to obtain direct reports from a special correspondent, whose letters will appear as qnickly as possible. By the courtesy of the Secretary for .Mines we are enabled to publish a report received from Mr Wfttson A. Steele, P. E. and mining reg ; strar at Wilcania :— " Wilcania Febroiy Uffc, 1881.— Sir. —Referring to my telegrams announcing the diseovory of gold at Mount Brown on tbe 7th. instant and subsequent dates. I have the honor now to report, for tbe information of the Minister for Mines, that a miner named James Evans, who is well known here as a selector, arrived in town last Monday, 7th, with tbe followb ing samples of gold : — One nugget weighing a trifle over Boa, a second and smaller one of 2oz. together with lOoz, of very ■ coarse nuggetty gold, in all ove r 240&] Evan* states, he aaji^trty of Mount Poole, on tbe side of a range at from lft to 6ft from tbe surface. The larger nuggets are of irregular shape— the largest slightly impregnated with quartz, and sold here for £4 2* 6J per oz. Tbe whole are much water«worn. Evans states that bis party only had an old pick and dish, with which they obtained the gold produced, which varies in size from that of a pea to that of an almond. No water supply is nearer than half a mile, which consists of a creek of good water. Mount Brown is about 180 miles from Wilcania, which is the nearest place to obtain supplies, there are both scarce and dear owing to tbe river being uona?iga« ble for some considerable t?me past. I bear, a rush is setting in from all direc* tions, and J think^he Press should wars those who are starting to wait a short time, as the. country is waterless for 40, miles on the road from here to Mount Brown. Numbers have left here, so that very; shortly something reliable will be known. I have instructed a person whom I can rely on td forward a report in a few days. I have issued about 100 miner's rights, .but many started before your instructions reached me to issue them I shall report to you from time to time anything of importance.— l have, &o. (signed) Watson A. Steel, P.M., Mim* ing Registrar."— From Sydney Town and Country Journal.
