[BY ELECTRIC TELEGRAPH.] [FBOM OUB OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Auckland, April 25. Cole, basket-maker, who was burnt out by the late fire, had been insured in the Victoria office for eighteen years. The inspector on his last visit to Auckland declined to renew the policy, owing to the character of the building, which so disgusted Cole tbat he did not try another office, aud has lost all. A boy named Mulhern, fourteen years of age, belonging to the Industrial Home, and placed out with Mr Wyatt, of Kaipara, stole a horse, saddle and bridle, and a seal-skin rug. and has taken to the bush. Tbe horse has been recovered, but the police have nofc succeeded in capturing Mulhern. Wickham, editor of the Free Lance. has been committed for trial on a charge of libelling Mr Hursfc, M.H.R. The defendant was admitted to bail, himself in £200, and two sureties of £100. Invercabgill April 23. Anderson Bro's. flour mill near Invercargill was burned down last night, and the working plant destroyed or made useless. The property was only insured for a small amount in the National. Chbtstchurch, April 23 A warrant his been issued for the arrest of W W. Charter?, now known to have left in the shipOrari, for London. His defalcations are said to exceed £2 000 from funds of Sydenham Building Society, of which he was manager. The warrant will be despatched by mail leaving to-day. Wellington. April 23. Whitelaw has been dismissed from the Civil Service of the Colony, and applica* tions are called for a resident medical superintendent for the Wellington Lunatic Asylum.
A warrant of arrest has been issued against Whitelaw at the ji.nslnnce of the Crown, calling on him to show cause why he should not -he adjudijed to pay to the Crown the sura of £270, being the aggregate amount of salary due ,t.o his mother, Mrs Kettle, while acting as matron of the Wellington Asylum, and received by; Whitelaw oo her account. Whitelaw at present being in gaol, awaiting trial on a charge of ill-treating a patient, tbe warrant cannot be executed ; but should he obtain the necessary bond on the first charge,*jtfie warrani will be served upon him.
