PHOENIX.
The low level has now been extended 101 feet from the point whence the oper# ations were resumed a few months ago. Only two men have been employed, and the driving has been very hard indeed, so that even with the greatest exertion only small progress has been made. A very severe bar, which for some time had taxed the energies of the men to the utmost, was broken through at the beginning of the week, and it was hoped that better country would follow. This expectation was only realised to; the extent of a few feet, when another hard bar was eocoun* tered, and which will have to be pierced before any hopes can be entertained of striking the reef at this level. AH reasonable computation point to the strong probability of the reef being met with in a short distance.^but no too sanguine expectations, nor any unauthenticated re* port, will liasjten the happy consummation one iota.
