MURRAY CREEK.
LOW LEVEL TUNNEL. The contractors are now within 20 feet
of tbc ilis'ance specified in tl.eir contract, and will finish in about tea days. The driving h«s boen gool— -15 to 16 feet being about the weekly average. Opera* tions have been somewhat retarded of late in consequence of the great influx of water, which has been encountered, and continues without abatement in the face of the workings. A great lodgement of the element must exist somewhere ahead of the present end of the tunnel, the ground becoming comparatively dry behind as the work progresses. No preliminaries have as yet been mooted for continuing the work at the termination of the existing contract. It is said that advices are expected daily from 'ictoria, respecting rock boring machinery, which it is intended to utilise for the greater dispatch 'of the work ; boweyer, as no delay on that account will be allowed to take place, it is probable that another small contract will be let for extending the tunnel in the mean* while, as the company evinoe every dis« position to~push on the work at all possible speed.
