THE WEEK.
Satubday, July 23. Tbe'past week closed in witn a sligbtlj improved tone in mining 'matters. The news received daring the week from the Lyell has had the effect of making some litt'e improvement in the market position of Alpine stocks, which are now much more firmly held. The fact that opera* tions in the vicinity of the Fleece block are now being .vigorously pushed forward in anticipation of the probable introduction by the company of a diamond drill has also given a more healthy tendency, and we do not exceed general expects* tions in expressing the belief that a marked improvement in the prospects of the mine may be looked for at an early date. The progress of the Inangahua Low Level Tunnel has been retarded to some extent of late, in consequence of some £ii.tch in the late tendering, and it is not improbable that the whole of the teaders last sent in will be set aside, and fresh offers invited. This delay, although annoying to the directors, was UDavoidable, and no time will be lost in getting the section under way. As the tunnel has new penetrated the slope of the hill, and reached what may be termed the " solid country " strong hopes are entertained of stone being met with during the progress of the present section. The driving is said to be not particularly bard, being through well-defined strata of slaty reef. Dull as the field is as a whole, the position as presented at the present time is not without a ray of hope. The following are the returns for the past week :-* WELCOME, 8920Z3 of amalgam. GOLDEN TREASURE, 146. zs of amal- j gam, from 70 tons of stone.
