REUTEE'S CABLEGRAMS. [PBOJI OUB OW COBBESPONDHNT.] Calcutta, July 28. Telegrams have been received from Candabar announcing that a batt'e was fought yesterday between the forces of Ayoub Khan and those of the Ameer, re« suiting in the defeat of the latter, and the Ameer's regiments deserted and joined Ayoub, and the rest of Abdul Bab man's force fiod after losing all guns and baggage. Later. A further telegram from Afghanistan reported that the battle between Ayoub's and the Ameer's troops was fought at Karaziratta (Karez lllaiyar ?), a short distance south of Candahar. Since their defeat all the Ameer's cavalry have joined Ayoub Khan, whose force has been materially strengthened. The Ameer's garrison in the city of Candahar is reported to be very weak j and unable to offer any strong resistance to Ayoub. Pab s 28. News has been received from Tunis that since the capture of the town of Cubes the French forces have occupied the Island of Gberba, in the Gulf of Cabes. London, 28. In the Commons to»day the Irish Land Bill was reported to the House with amendments made in Committee, and the third reading was fixed for the next sit* ting. The race for the Goo Iwood Cup, two and a-balf miles, was run to«day, and resulted us follows :- « Madame Dv Barry 1 Nottingham 2 Fernaodez 3 Sydnjsi, 29. No fresh cases of smalt pox have been reported. In the libel action brought by Dr Birmingham, Itoman Cajtyojio priest of Wagga Wagga, against the Sydney Evening News, the defendants have con* seated to a verdict for £500. Brisbane. 31. Three important libel actions are pending. One has been brought by Mr Hemmans against; the Observer for £5000 damages ; Ihe other two informations are laid by Coote, a journalist, and Perkins, the Secretary of Londs. against the Evangelical Standard, damages be* ing laid at £1000 and £2000 respectively. \ telegram is to hand from Rockhampton stating that a nurse*girl walking with three children carelessly dropped one of them into the river, and then it is further alleged drowned tho other two in order to prevent their telling* An inquiry is being instituted.
