Five prisoners, who were arrested under tho provisions of the Coercion Act, were to-day released, Among tbe number was Father Sheehy, who was arrested in May last. The announcement contained in Moni day's Standard that Transvaal Yolks* raad, had refused to ratify Anglo.Boer Convention, is not confirmed. Telegrams received from the Cape report that Volksraad is still discussing the Convention, but speeches of members have so far been hostile to its ratification Sydney, September 28. H.M S. Wolverine arrived here to* (New Guinea) the. scene of the recent massacre of the native missionary. The chief who was concerned in the massacre, and several other natives, were killed, and possession was taken of the village, but only one house, the residence of the chief, was destroyed. It is believed that the severe punishment inflicted on the Kalo natives wiil have salutary effect, and prevent recurrence of outrages in New Guinea. Small-pox in this city ia gradually decreasing—several of the patients, who have been quarantined at their residences, haye now been removed to the enclosure. A man named Soothcott died in quarantine to-day
